A current directory snapshot contains 167 active Care Quality Commission provider records mapped to Preston, including 75 GP practices and 92 dental services.

The figures illustrate why a search for a “CQC registered Preston” provider can return very different kinds of service. A dental practice and a GP surgery may both be registered providers, but they are not interchangeable results.

Readers can explore the individual records on the Preston CQC provider page. A separate CQC ratings by area report compares provider coverage across the towns held in the directory.

What the Preston snapshot shows

Of the 167 active records returned, 75 were categorised as GP practices and 92 as dental services. The national comparison showed 34.1% of Preston’s active records with a latest overall rating of Good or Outstanding.

That percentage needs context. It uses all active records returned for the area as the denominator, including providers that may not yet have an overall rating or whose services are assessed in a different way. It should not be read as saying that the remaining providers are inadequate.

Nor does a large provider count prove that residents can quickly obtain an NHS appointment. Registration status, service type, current patient acceptance, opening hours and accessibility all require separate checks.

Three checks before choosing a provider

A published CQC rating can be valuable evidence, but residents should combine it with practical information.

  • Confirm the service type. Check that the registered location actually provides the care required. Similar names and group operators can make this less obvious than it sounds.
  • Read the evidence date. Open the latest inspection or assessment information and note when it was produced. A historic rating may not reflect a recent operational change.
  • Contact the provider. Ask about services, accessibility, opening times and whether new NHS patients are currently being accepted.

When a decision depends on current regulatory information, residents should verify the result through the official CQC service finder.

Why unrated does not automatically mean unsafe

Some active locations do not have a single overall rating displayed. That can happen for several reasons, including the way a service is regulated or because a rating has not yet been published. “Not yet rated” should therefore be treated as missing evidence to investigate, not converted into a positive or negative score.

The same caution applies to comparisons between places. Areas differ in population, provider mix and the way services are distributed. A town with more records has not necessarily got better access, and a higher percentage of Good or Outstanding records does not capture appointment availability or individual experience.

Making public data easier to inspect

CheckMyGP organises active published CQC location records into town and provider pages. It is a discovery tool rather than a replacement for the regulator, a medical recommendation or a measure of NHS capacity.

The Preston page gives residents a clearer starting point: choose the correct provider type, inspect the relevant rating and then confirm the details at the official source. Because the underlying register changes, the live page should be consulted for updates after this 31 August 2026 snapshot.
